Parent Visa Wait Times
How long is the parent visa wait, really?
The honest answer, and what to do while you wait.
Parent visas carry some of the longest queues in the Australian migration system. For the non-contributory pathways the wait is measured in decades, not years. The contributory pathways buy a shorter queue, but it is still a wait of many years. The onshore aged pathway is the quickest of them, and it lets the parent live in Australia while they wait.
Two things make the wait hard to plan around. The queue moves in steps as the Department releases dates each quarter, and the figures shift with each release. And the visa is not fully assessed when you lodge: health, character and the balance of family test are checked again years later, when your turn finally comes. Getting the pathway right at the start is what protects all those years of waiting.
